Advocate
for Community
Talk about Community 30x30: The ocean doesn’t have a voice - it needs yours to help raise awareness within your community and create momentum. Your reach and voice can have an impact.
Speak to your local MP: Your local representatives need to know that you advocate for sustainable and grassroots management of marine protected areas. Tell your MP why marine conservation matters to you, and why they should support communities taking local action.
Become an ocean influencer: Your voice also carries to those around you. Any story you share on social media could reach someone with no idea about the challenges that the ocean faces. And that’s one more person in the know.
Join
Community
We hope the community stories we highlight inspire you to take action for your local MPA. Learn from those who have travelled this journey to explore what you and your local community can do. You can find out if your area has an MPA site designation here and here.
If you are a community group already working at a designated protected area, we would love to hear from you! Your stories can act as inspiration and guidance to all those that want to follow in your footsteps.
Contribute Data Through Citizen Science
The best decisions are driven by data, but ocean data collection can be labour-intensive and incomplete. This means we lack the full picture when it comes to conservation. The best and easiest way to combat this is to get more people involved, no matter the size of contribution.
Offer Skills or Volunteer
Volunteering gives anyone a hands-on way to protect the ocean and feel connected to something bigger than themselves. Whether it’s helping with beach cleanups, community outreach, or citizen science projects, volunteers make a big impact while learning more about marine life and environmental challenges. It also builds a sense of community and inspires others to care about our shared oceans. Check with your local MPA to see if they have any volunteer schemes available.
Sea-Changers maintain a great list of marine conservation volunteering opportunities here.
Occasionally we offer opportunities for volunteers to help with our work. Find our current volunteering opportunities here.
Support
Our Work
As a charity, we rely on the goodwill and generosity of others to keep doing what we do. Every donation, big or small, helps us provide marine communities with the know-how to keep their area healthy.
Currently we are fundraising to expand our team:
- To develop a database for capturing details of community activity, ultimately working towards an interactive Community 30x30 atlas; and
- To enable us to build further on our progress in Scotland and extend our engagement and activities to other locations.
If you would like to support our work or collaborate with us on a project supporting community managed MPAs, please get in touch.
